PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE MANAKI BROTHERS IN A NEW LIGHT!

On Monday, October 27, at 8 p.m., an exhibition of works created during the alternative photography workshops held in the village of Smilevo will open at the Cultural Information Center – Skopje, organized by the Zrno Festival.

From July 17 to 23, the monastery of St. Peter and Paul in Smilevo became home to one of the most inspiring summer artistic gatherings, where about fifty photographers and young authors from various European countries, together with volunteers from Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia, took part in the fourth edition of Zrno, dedicated to noble photographic processes.

This year, Zrno offered eight workshops filled with experimentation, shared passion, chemistry, and love for art. Participants explored and created together, building a sincere and creative relationship with photography.

The following seven-day intensive workshops were held in Smilevo under the guidance of:

  • Predrag Uzelac (Novi Sad) – Collodion Photography
  • Ivana Brezovac (Belgrade) – Advanced Black and White Photography
  • Martina Pavloska (Milan) – Creative Play with Polaroid
  • Florian Kopr (Vienna) – Strategies for Developing an Artistic Vision
  • Vjeran Hrpka (Osijek) – Fodjo and Hemigram Techniques
  • Damian Diaconescu (Timișoara) – Gumoil and Gum Bichromate Print
  • Emilija Sandić (Belgrade) – Experiments with Mordançage
  • Sašo Aluševski (Skopje) – Cyanotype and Lumen Print

This year, the Zrno Festival enriched its program with an exceptionally important segment — an exhibition featuring negatives from the opus of the Manaki Brothers, kindly provided and digitized by the State Archive of Macedonia – Bitola Department.

These rare materials, testaments to the first steps of Balkan photography, have been revived through their contemporary reinterpretation in various historical techniques. In this way, they were given new life — as a poetic dialogue between past and present, and as a heartfelt tribute to the vision and legacy of the Manaki Brothers, within this year’s collaboration between Zrno and the State Archive of Macedonia.

This year, Zrno gathered more than 250 photographers from all over the world through diverse activities.

Zrno is more than an event — it is a movement that unites art, nature, and people in a primal experience.

It is a place where photography breathes, inspires, and connects — where magic is created through light, time, and love.
